Karen, I edited your post to exclude your phone number. Just a word of caution, I wouldn’t post your number on the internet, but feel free to post an email addy (preferably a yahoo or gmail) just to be safe.
A book club could be fun! I don’t know if I’d have time, but I’m open to possibilities. There is someone in Aylmer who is trying to start a garden club as well, she has a little blurb in the Aylmer Bulletin http://www.bulletinaylmer.com/calendrier.html, if anyone is interested.

Margaret, I have no idea what goes on around Ste Eustache, but I would imagine there would be drop in community centers, that may host playgroups.

    Hi there,

I came across your blog and it piqued my interest firstly because you’re in Aylmer (I am, too) and secondly because you have children. I’m a university student studying Elementary Education and I’m looking for occasional babysitting jobs in Aylmer over the summer months. I realize this is a bit of an odd way to go about it, but I figured I might as well give it a try. I have plenty of babysitting experience (I’m also working in a daycare this summer) and I can definitely provide references.
If you’re at all interested in discussing further, feel free to send me an email: acunningham07@ubishops.ca.

    Thanks!
    Amy

Hi Sam, Just stumble on your blog. very nice photos you posted on flickers. Just seen your getting back from camping. To bad about the rain.
We had so much rain this year too. 43 days of rain since summer started. I don’t know if you remember me, I picked up some brugs last fall at your place. I’m from Grand-Falls NB. Wanted to let you know they are all in buds right now.The white one has opened up in July. Very beautiful flowers. Thanks a bunch, your generosity was very appreciated. Did you say, you had a versi peach among them? I mixed up the tag to them. White must be the candida?
And remember a frosty pink. Seen it in the photos you posted.
I think I lost the Orange one, not sure. Anyway glad to have met up with you here.

    Hi Bernadette!
Of course I remember you! Not to many people come that far to pick up brugs. The white one is a noid, the Peach you have is probably the Candida, and yes, there was Frosty Pink.
It has been an incredibly rainy summer, but the brugs are enjoying it.
Glad to hear you’ve seen blooms! They are amazing, aren’t they!
I’m sure I’ll have more cuttings in the fall, if you’re interested. Then I can definitely send you a V Peach.
    Sam.

Thanks for the info. I love the flowers, One is just about to open fully, maybe in the morning it will be, and I’ll know what color it is. I’m afraid the one I planted in the ground will not have time to flower. It’s huge. I’m going to cut it to the ground and use a bubbler to root it over winter. Some have asked me for cuttings, I’ll have plenty of that one, and some from the big pots to share. The white stayed small, I think my pot wasn’t big enough, and it didn’t produce much leaves, but it was the first to put out blooms. Had problem with spider mites, only notice late, and the leaves have turn yellowish on those in pots. Live and learn. I thought it was to much rain! I sure didn’t have problems getting them watered though. :) Have you heard about Brugmansia Quebec.com? They sell some, at a good price. I got a Charles Grimaldi cutting from them, and Iochroma, which is in the same family as brugs.
I plan on getting a nice deep orange one and doubles brugs, next year.
I’d love a vpeach for sure, thanks. Let me know when it’s ready and I’ll send postage for it.

I just stumbled upon your site and found it very interesting.

We are a local seed farm selling heirloom varieties (about 600) including some 350 certified organic.

We are called Eternal Seed or Ferme Notre Heritage and are located in Farrellton about 10 minutes north of Wakefield.

I would be thrilled if you would provide a link to my website where you may shop on-line or download a catalog as a printable pdf.

    http://www.eternalseed.ca

I can be found every Saturday at the Ottawa Organic Farmers Market (see http://www.OOFMarket.ca) and will be at the Ottawa Seedy Saturday (see http://www.seeds.ca)

If you have Aylmer events, I would be pleased to attend and offer seed saving courses through Canadian Organic Growers

Many thanks & have a great season.

Love the site. I am a retired civil servant who is interested in java programming and dynamic web pages (via Java Server Pages, Apache-Tomcat etc). I would love to get in touch with other retired people in Aylmer that share similar computer interests, or even in those that might need some web site help (with Java, Apache-Tomcat or Ubuntu).

People can come to my web site between 7:00 AM and 10:00 PM (it runs off a computer in my basement; more info on my web site) and leave a message.

    Love your site.

Try the Little Friends Playgroup. They meet at the church across from Tim’s on Rue Principale every morning. The entrance is on your right hand, in the back, across from the little preschool. Starts at 9:30, goes till noon or so. Haven’t gone in a long time, but owe a lot of my sanity to the get togethers. Just drop in one morning to find out more.

Hi! Just found this cool blog while doing a google search for playgroups. I’ll try out that United Church one. :) Also, I’m making up posters to put at Sol and around asking for people interested in forming an Outdoors Club for families to contact us. It’d be me and my son who is 4. We love the forest and we’d love to go to Gatineau Park or even a small patch of woods to learn while playing with adults and their kids. We are bilingual and just moved to Aylmer. I can be contacted at 8sageseeds@gmail.com.
Much Eco-love to you all! :)

My daughter, who is 20, has a son 11 months old and a step daughter who is 6, my daughter is English first language but is bilingual. She is looking for a play group so she can connect with other mothers and their kids. She is living in a home in the Wynchwood area. Any suggestions, she has been so frustrating trying to find something and is concerned about fitting in since she is younger. She is an EXCELLENT, very conscientious mom, breast feeding, makes her own food, reads to her son a lot, but wishes him to have a lot more stimulation and she is lonely. I would greatly appreciate your help. Great blog by the way, thank you for it!

Hi Jan. Please encourage your daughter to try the Little Friends Playgroup that is mentioned above. The group is exactly for people like your daughter, moms who are looking for friendly faces, and friends for their kids to play with. Age really doesn’t matter.
The library also has some reading programs for little kids, she could check those out as well. I know Aylmer use to have a ‘Welcome Wagon’ for people who’ve just moved here, I’m not %100 they still do, but it would be something to look into, they’d have lots of information for newcomers. Hope this helps.
And please welcome her to Wychwood for me. It’s a wonderful neighborhood, and most people are so friendly here. Just getting out, walking around, and saying hello to the people she meets will be a positive thing for her, and perhaps lead to some neighborhood friendships. Walking my dog was a great way to meet neighbors, and almost all dog owners are chatty folk.

    Hi everyone,
I am immigrating to Quebec in April. I am considering the area of Gatineau (Hull/Aylmer). I speak only english and I will really appreciate if someone can guide me in which area I should look for accommodation. I have a 2 yrs old daughter and we will be using public transport system. I am planning on renting a 3 1/2 apartment in the amount of $ 650-700 per month inclusive of all. I am inclined towars Hull as I found on the internet tht it is faster to commute to Ottawa in case I get a job there. Any suggested will be welcomed.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
We are thinking of moving to Aylmer…read the previous comments about neighbourhoods and was wondering if you had any info on the new Richcraft community on the golf course of Aylmer rd. We where also looking at the Montessori school, does it have good reviews? How about the daycares? I am so worried about finding a place that my son will adapt too, this is such a stressful decision…help :)

    Hey Sammy,
Wow, you know, your blog is just about the only connecting thread between all us web-obsessed Aylmerites, ha ha. Every time I google something for Aylmer, nothing comes up but your blog – sorry for hijacking it, but here goes!

For all the newcomers, the Regional Association of West Quebeccers (RAWQ: http://www.westquebecers.com/) used to have an excellent welcome package for English-speaking new residents. It really helps direct you to the services you need! Not sure if they still do it, but it’s worth asking them about. Their website also has quite a bit of info on where to find things like health-care, etc. on this side of the river.

For daycares, I’ve had good luck with the magarderie.com website and be sure to check the CPE for Aylmer (http://www.cpelaribambelle.com/site.asp) – they list all the available openings for certified home daycares (and often subsidized ones) in the area but the key with that one is to get up early and be the first to call (I was too disorganized for this).

I just contacted the Montessori school too – the child must be fully fluent in French in order to attend, so that may rule our little one out (she doesn’t talk yet but since she’s home all day with English-speaking me, it doesn’t bode well for her). She can’t start until she’s 5 anyway though, so we have time.

And for those of you out there looking for play groups or just different ways to meet moms, try this meetup group: http://www.meetup.com/playgroup-901/ If anything it gives you some good ideas for things to do in this area and can connect you to other moms with like interests.

By the way, did that garden club ever get started? And also, has anyone heard any more about the Farmers Market starting up?

There is a horticultural Society in Gatineau “La Société d’horticulture et d’écologie de l’Outaouais”. Each month we organize a conference with a well-known gardener . If you are interested, please visit our website at http://www.sheo.fsheq.org. Many of our members are bilingual and come as far as Luksville, Ottawa and Aylmer of course. You can also contact Sylvie Rouleau Présidente at 819-684-7244.

    Thanks.

there’s a bilingual playgroup in the hall at Christ Church (behind Moca Loca) on Tuesdays from 9:30-11:30am. it’s free so cost isn’t an issue. they will be closing for the summer but you could probably meet some moms who would love to do playdates for the summer time.
