And now for something completely different…

Okay, maybe not completely, cause if you’ve talked to me recently, then I’ve probably mentionned this about oh, maybe a million times already!  But I am sold.  Totally and utterely sold.  In fact, I’m am so sold, that when I get my real live horse next fall, he/she will be on a hemp diet too.  I’ve heard all the jokes (mostly at work) but I’ve been eating hemp seed for a little while now, and I am convinced it is making a big difference in how I’ve been feeling.  Not just mentally (I’ve always been a tad crazy) but physically too.  Either that or it really is all in my head (which means I’m more than just a tad crazy!)  According to what I’ve been able to find out so far, hemp is pretty much a fantastic addition to almost anyone’s diet, including horses and other livestock, even dogs.  The only animal it is not recommended for is cats, because of their more carnivorous diet.

When I came home today from work, I was beyond tired.  I’d had a really bad night’s sleep, waking up at 3am with the sweats (yet again!! WTF – I am too young for menopause, but I’m starting to think this is the beginning of perimenopause) and tossing and turning for the rest of the night, till I finally fell into a coma just before my alarm went off.  Of course.  So I didn’t ride today, although North could have used an outing.  I was just too tired.  Brain dead tired.  Came home, had a bite to eat, turned on the puter to write some emails, and ate some hemp seeds as I was surfing a bit.  Twenty minutes later, I was resting on the couch, (I had planned on taking a nap as soon as I got home and ate), listening to ‘The Point’ on CBC and feeling a lot better.  I was still tired, but my brain didn’t hurt so much anymore.  And I was feeling relaxed, and comfy.  Yes, could have been the big comfy couch, the closing of my eyes, the full tummy, but been there done that.  This felt good beyond that.  So I’m going to give the credit to my new found miracle food for now.  And have I mentionned my swimmer’s knee?  It feels a helluva lot better lately too.  So I’m going to keep scarfing the seeds (recommended 3-4 tbsps a day) and even if it is my mind playing tricks (which I don’t believe for a minute), I’ll still feel better than I have been.  If you don’t believe me, try it for yourself. Give it a month and if it doesn’t work for you, what have you lost?  It is healthy, organic and even kosher (even if it doesn’t claim to be, it is – hemp is so easy to grow there is no need for pesticides or other chemicals), and not that expensive.  You can sprinkle it on your cereal or yogurt in the morning, eat it raw by the spoonful like I do, which is usually in the afternoon – I should eat breakfast, I know!!!!  (it tastes pretty good raw), add it to granola, pasta, pretty much anything.  I plan on making some pesto with it next.  And hummus.  You can even buy hemp butter, same as peanut butter, but actually good for you.

Alright, that’s my granola crunching, tree hugging, Berkenstock wearing, peace pipe smoking post for the new year.  Try hemp.  Support a new Canadian industry.  Keep it going and keep it legal.   Do something healthy for yourself.  Humor me.  Whatever your reason, just try it.

Lastly, on this subject, hemp is not pot, it is not cannabis, it does not make you high, it contains no thc, it is not illegal, it is easily grown with very little care making it an ideal crop environmentally speaking, it contains essential fatty oils for human development, has calming properties, helps with arthritis and joint pain, and oh, just about a dozen or more incredible things that you have to check out and try for yourself. And I don’t get any kick backs.  Although I would take them if anyone wants to send me any!

Now,for something completely different, I tried to sign my girls up for swimming lessons tonight.  There is always a mad rush, because there are limited spots.  So limited, in fact, that 24 lucky children in each level will learn how to not drown.  In this family oriented community of Aylmer (fuck you Gatineau you screwed us over) where we have massive housing developments, bringing in lots of new families whilst destroying any remaining semblence of the beautiful little town and the green spaces it once boasted, there are only 24 spaces per level in a swimming program with 8 levels.  Check my math for me but does that not equal 192 spaces?  Which equals less than two hundred children, over the age of six, who get to take swimming lessons???  That pretty much equals my kids’ kindergartens and grade twos thrown in together.  From one school. So again, I say, WTF!!!! Wake up Gatineau councillors, you shit eaters, do something for the people in your city.  That is ridiculous, and unacceptable.  I will be calling you.  Hoping others will to.

And finally, two of my favorite things lately.  As it is winter, I love a roaring fire.  But does anyone else see what I see in these flames?   Must be the hemp!

Is my fire giving me the finger?  And are those two bunnies?  Or deer?

jan-014This little thing is the size of a matchbox, and it plays the radio!!!! I love it.  I’m a radio fanatic.  It also plays a bazillion songs, but it also plays the radio!!!! I’m love music, but I love radio, especially CBC, and talk radio, just find it more interesting sometimes.  Sure beats my walkman of olden days.  Although it does still play tapes and radio.  And I’ve still got one of those ancient portable cd players too.  I’m not ready for an Ipod.

School’s out for summer…

No more pencils

No more books

No more teacher’s dirty looks

Thanks Alice!

Emma’s last day of school.  Then soon we are heading out to Old Baldy Head Joe’s in Hamilton.  His real name is Mike, but the last time he came to visit us, he had shaved his hair, and so that is what the kids call him.  We are doing a mini tour for the kids, hitting Marine Land, and Wonderland, with one extra day for sight seeing around Niagara Falls or wherever our day takes us.   Then home in time for Mom and Dad to come visit.  This year, Canada Day lands on a Tuesday.   I may take the girls to the market this year to see the party first hand.  Buses will hopefully be running a bit more often than usual, and I certainly don’t want to drive over towards downtown Ottawa.

My sister Sarah and her hubs, Joachim, are coming soon after, for a visit to Canada.  I can’t wait to see them again.  She lives in Vienna, which is just so far away!  We usually have at least one good board game battle when we get together, which is always fun!  And I think Mom and Dad will be coming back to Aylmer so they can see them as well.

Then in August, we are going to Silent Lake for a week, our annual camping trip.  I can’t wait.  I know I’ve said it before, but this is the absolutely nicest place to go camping.  The swimming is fantastic, the hiking trails are great, and the campsite are very private.  Plus we can bring the dog with us, which makes her very happy.  She hates being left behind!  She is such a sucky baby, really part of the family and I’ve never met a better dog with children.

I may drive back to the Sault for a few days, to visit Mom and Dad, and take the girls around to see some of Todd’s family there.  Maybe stop in North Bay for a day on the way there, and on the way back, to visit with Monica.  We’ll see what the price of gas is around then, if I can afford it!  That’s going to be the killer this summer, the price of gas.

Then before I know it, school will be starting again.  This year will be very different, with both girls going to school.  I’m not sure what I’m going to do with myself.  I may have to try and get a part time job who knows doing what!  My French is not up to Quebec standards, so I may be looking in Ottawa, which kind of sucks.  It’ll mean more driving, so more money for gas.  I’ve been thinking of going back to school, but haven’t made any firm decisions yet.

Sounds like a busy summer.  We’ll have lots of days at the beach too.

Now if it would only stop raining!

PS   I’ve updated the pool schedule, as there is a new summer schedule.  I’ve noticed most people come here looking for the pool hours!

Just for kicks…

It’s still pretty darn cold out, but a nice sunny day.  Supposed to warm up tonight, so that it can snow!!  Meg’s day at Jacob’s, so my laundry day.  And I am actually doing it, in between a few other things.

I realize I live in Canada.  Winter is supposed to be cold and snowy.  If you don’t like it, either move south or suck it up, right?  Well, we’re not moving any time soon, so I guess I’ll just have to suck it up.   My friend Eva, who moved to Vancouver a while ago, likes to point out that it rains there a lot, so even though it’s much warmer, it’s not perfect.  You know what, Eva?  Well, I can’t write down what I just thought, but you get the gist.  Suck it up!!  Ah, you know I’m just jealous.  But I would trade a couple rainy weeks for this unbearable cold, just let me say that.

I’ve noticed people are looking for things to do in Aylmer, especially with kids.  It’s a small town, but if you take the time to get to know it, it’s friendly and family oriented.  Here’s a few things that I’ve found.

Little Friends Playgroup is run by volunteers, and meets in the mornings at the Aylmer United Church (not affiliated, we just rent space from the church), right across from the Tim Horton’s, Monday to Friday, from 9:30 am to 11:30.  The back door entrance is right across from the preschool.  Drop ins are welcome, $2, if you want to just check it out.  I have met some great people through the playgroup, when I first moved here, and it really helped me to get out, as well as my girls.  I know how isolating it can feel with little kids, when you are new in town, and don’t know anyone.  Feel free to contact me if anyone wants more information.

In the winter, sledding at the marina park is great fun. We also recently discovered the little skating rink at the Belmont community center.  There is a larger one for kids playing hockey, but the little one is perfect for little kids.  The Ottawa river itself provides a beautiful outdoor playground,  for skiing, or tugging the kids on sleds.  I walk the dog on the frozen river a lot.  Just bundle up, cause it can be a lot colder on the river than in your backyard.

Of course, my beloved pool must be mentioned.  When it’s -20C, it feels pretty good to thumb your nose at the cold!  Check out my pool page for more info.

And of course, there are tons of museums all around Ottawa and Gatineau.  You can borrow a pass at the library for the Museum of Civilization and the Children’s Museum, which will save a pretty penny.  (I haven’t done so, but friends have.  Contact the library for more info, or better yet, visit in person and check out what’s going on at the local library.) And if you take the bus to the museum, instead of trying to find parking, kids under 5 are free on the STO.  A relatively cheap excursion.  We recently bought a family pass for the Museum of Nature, which is a pretty neat museum.  The kids love it.  Dinosaurs, and mammals, and the bird exhibit is really cool.  Very well detailed, if you have any interest, you could spend an hour or two just on the birds alone.

And if you really need to get out, need a place for the kids to run around, and you want to sit down and relax, as a last resort, go to McDonald’s.  I am not big on fast food, and I really don’t want to encourage anyone to eat badly, but they do have an indoor playroom for the kids.  Sometimes, you really do need to give yourself a break!

Summer in Aylmer is even nicer!

If anyone wants to add some details, or suggestions, please feel free to leave a comment!

Rain or snow, Mom, make up your mind!!

Good old mother nature is having some fun.  Don’t know if Emma needs her snowsuit or her umbrella.  That’s November for you.

We went swimming again today after school, and we went as a family yesterday too.  I actually tore Todd away from Eve!  And once again, my lovely little van decided to give me a scare.  I ran into Loblaws on the way home, and Todd and the girls waited in the car.  The battery died.  Arrghh!  Poor Todd walked home to get the other car and the battery pack, and thankfully it was fine.  But once again, I’m a little leery.  And we are going to visit Grandma Monica this weekend, just me and the girls.  So I’m a little worried about that.  I really hope nothing happens.  We took it for Thanksgiving, all was good, so knock on wood, it’ll be fine.  So far so good.

Well, not much else is going on.  I’m watching the movie “Borat” again, don’t ask me why.  I didn’t find it that amusing the first time, although the out-takes were hilarious.   It’s the old 400 channels and nothing on!  Go figure.  Maybe I’ll go find a book to read in bed.  Sounds like a plan.

‘Night All!

Here little fishy fishies…

Ah, we finally went swimming. Emma hasn’t forgotten a thing, she can do the backstroke, the front stroke, and swim underwater. Jumping off the diving board, and practicing her diving off the side of the pool, she did great. Meg was equally impressive. Swam under water, swam across the short side, and went down the slide without hesitation. My muscles kind of went “ah”, I remember this. We almost didn’t go, because my ear is still plugged and I’m still on the extremely-tired-because-of-this-darn-cold side, but both girls really wanted to go, so we did. So glad cause it felt great, and I’d almost forgotten how much I enjoy swimming and watching my girls conquer the water. So it’s back into the swim of things for us!!

The powers that be have added some new swim times as well, although unless you actually go to the pool, and get a schedule, there’s no way of finding out what the hours are.

So I will post the time table here, and please, I’ll try to be accurate, but if there is any omission or mistake, don’t get too mad at me. I just want to help people find out about the pool and the hours, and encourage people to use it, so they don’t cut back on free swim time again!! And there is no place online you can go to find out the hours (which is ridiculous!). And if you’ve stumbled onto this blog, looking for the location, it is right across from the Loblaws, on Rue Principale. You really can’t miss it.  Look under my pages for the hours.
