Is it spring yet???

We’ve had beautiful weather the last little while, bright sunny days that just make you want to play in the sun and the dirt! Woke up this morning to another snowfall. Not a lot, just enough to coat everything in white, and make a joke out of the plastic I just bought on Saturday for my row tunnels. (Note: this is not complaining!) Just letting my wonderful sister know that she can stop mentioning the 20 degree sunny weather in Vienna for a few more weeks! But it is almost April, it is almost spring! It is just around the corner, I know it.

My tomatoes have started sprouting, and I’m still planting. I have lots to plant, and I’m still waiting for my order from BakerCreek. It should be here any day! I haven’t even started any of the other veggies or fruit, save the watermelon Meg chose and a liitle bit of basil. We also decided to try pumpkins again this year. I’ve never really successfully grown pumpkins, although to be honest, I’ve never really tried very hard. They need a lot of compost, as do the watermelon, so I’ll be looking to find some good shit! Seriously! If Emma takes some more riding lessons, I’ll have to ask if they have a manure pile, if they sell it, etc…I remember when I had horses, and people would come to the Pony Club (especially Italians – they were really on to something), to get manure for their gardens. I always thought it was funny. Now I realize just what a gold mine a pile of horse poo can be. It’s all in your perspective, I guess.

Plantaholics Anonymous

A few tip offs that you may need serious help:

  1. You sometimes have more plants in the kitchen sink that dishes.
  2. Your plants take almost as many baths as you do.
  3. You refer to seed and garden catalogs as garden porn.
  4. You take longer to tuck your plants in some nights, than you do your children.
  5. You dream about tomatoes. Literally.
  6. You agonize for days to shorten your lists of what to grow, and you still have over 75 different tomatoes on it!
  7. Your husband/spouse/partner complemented you on your good behavior and restraint while shopping at a feed/seed/farm store.
  8. You lovingly caress the leaves on your plants while simultaneously squishing off aphids, with bare hands.
  9. You feel the need to justify to your h/s/p why someone else spent $280 on a brug (The Chief) on ebay!
  10. You don’t think it strange that one of your plants is referred to as ‘Big Mama’ by the whole family. (and you started it)
  11. You know there are others out there, just like you, who get it. You’ve talked to them.
  12. You know there are others out there, who think you are nuts. You’ve talked to them too!
  13. You can spend hours talking (somewhat intelligently and fluently) about tomatoes and plants and gardening with complete strangers, but get flustered and tongue tied at the deli counter when the clerk asks you if you’d like anything else.

I think I’ll stop at lucky number 13.  But you get the picture.

Off to the races…

Happy Easter Weekend, here’s hoping the bunny will swing buy to indulge my children in chocolate and yours as well.

The tomatoes have been let out of the barn (how’s that for a mixed metaphor?) I’ve started 6 flats of 36 cells worth of tomatoes. For those who don’t get the new math either, that’s 216 possible plants. (I used a calculator, pretty sure it still works!) That is so far only 17 different varieties. I still have many more to go. In the last few days, I’ve received some unexpected (and overly generous) packages and I’m still waiting for my order from Baker Creek. Did I mention that I broke down decided I should still support the small seed company(s) that I like, even if it’s just a small order, because I believe in their business philosophy? So I’m starting to realize that my cup will overfloweth with tomato plants.

I am really hoping that my tomato sales will be a success this year. I have had a small plant sale in the spring for the past few years, and they’ve been pretty well received. I’m looking into perhaps setting up shop at the Chelsea farmer’s Market, although it doesn’t open until June 2nd, and most people have purchased their plants by then. Still trying to come with ideas to make this a hobby that pays for itself at least. Profit would be nice, but let’s face it, I don’t think anyone growing and selling plants has gotten rich!

I’m also working on a tomato database, with some help from my patient husband, the computer genius. There are many resources out there already, but this is for me, and for what I grow.

We went traipsing about town today, and I made it to Ritchie’s Feed and Seed, finally. Picked up some of Bavicchi’s Pleurotus ostreatus mycelium – or in plain english, Oyster mushroom spores. I’ve never tried to grow mushrooms before, so this should be interesting. I also bought some snow peas sprout seeds (yes, I realize they are simply snow pea seeds, but they aren’t treated with anything because they are specifically for human consumption). And Meg picked out a package of Watermelon seeds, that she really, really wanted. How cool is it that my five year old begged for watermelon seeds, out of anything else in the store?

I wanted to price the plastic for some low tunnels that I’m thinking of building. $300.00 for 100ft of commercial grade plastic. Ouch. I can’t afford that. I’ll have to do some shopping around, and see what else I can come up with.

Well, back to dyeing Easter Eggs.

Here’s a pic of the 6 trays (that took me almost 4 hours total – I’m picky about seeding), behind my flowering fuschia. This plant has been going strong all winter. It was a tiny little stick of a fuschia, when I bought it late last summer, for a whopping 50 cents. Look at it now.

Leaps and Bounds

Lounging on the couch in the sun. Sounds nice, doesn’t it!

Todd’s suggestion for a caption: “Puurtt ‘em up” a la Silvester, from Looney Tunes.

And one more pic, of Galina’s Yellow. She is agrowing, strongly and quickly. A few brugs in the back ground. They don’t look like much yet, but give ‘em time.

my-boys-019.jpg

Last night, I made cabbage rolls.  I like them, but they’re nothing really special in my eyes.  Todd, on the other hand, really likes them.  So, I make ‘em.  They are very easy to make, but time consuming.  Nothing says love like homemade cabbage rolls!  I usually listen to Randy Bachman’s show, Vinyl Tap, on Saturday nights (CBC radio),and putter in the kitchen, or on the computer.   I used to go out dancing on Saturday nights, now I just dance at home in my kitchen!  I must be getting old!!

When my parents were here, Mom, Meg and I made are way downtown Ottawa, to the Byward Market.   There are two great shops, that I love.  One is the International  Cheese shop, the other is La Bottega.  If you like really good cheese, good olives, olive oil, and to die for baklava, hit International Cheese first to scope out the deals on cheese, and indulge in their baklava, then head over to La Bottega for the olives, and oil and any thing else that strike your fancy.   My Mom bought me a really nice hat from a street vendor, made in Nepal.  I’m not a hat person, but I love this hat!   Meg kept going on about being downtown.  We were going to get BeaverTails, but the line up was so long, that we didn’t have time to wait.  Had to go and pick up Emma after school.  I hadn’t realized that I’ve never really taken the girls to the Market.  This summer I’ll have to, when all the vendors are out and it is busy.  Now that they are older, it will actually mean something to them.  A day in the Market, poutine, beavertails, wander through Parliament grounds, could be lots of fun.

Skinny Jeans and Summer Plans

This is a girl thing. I bought a pair of really nice jeans the other day, that don’t quite fit. Another girl (?)/woman I was chatting with does the same thing, so I know I’m not the only one. She calls them ‘hopeful pants’. Yep, I’m talking about weight. How hard can it be to lose 20 lbs, right? I just gotta step up the exercise and cut back the calories a bit. I have quite a few pairs of ‘hopeful pants’, and I even have a gorgeous ‘hopeful skirt’. This year I will fit it!! I hope!

I just finished booking our summer vacation on line. I shouldn’t tell anyone about it, because I had a hard time finding a free site, at the time we wanted, and the more people find out about it, the more people are booking, the less availability there is. But I guess that the way it goes. And I shouldn’t keep secrets, right? And it feels great to know that we are going again this summer. Something to really look forward too, especially this time of year. So we have the same site as last summer, at Silent Lake. It is absolutely beautiful, a walk in site, fairly private, and right on the edge of a swampy clearing. Last summer we had deer walk right in and we sat on the rocks at the edge of the water and watch the meteor showers at night. Simply stunning! I love camping there. It’s not really roughing it, but a happy medium I guess. I love sleeping in a tent. I love sitting around the fire at night. I love the swimming there, and canoeing, and hiking, and fishing. I’m not a girly girl.

Mom and Dad were here for the March break, they just left this morning. My Dad loved bowling on the Wii, but Mom kicked ass! It was pretty funny. We stayed up pretty late the last few nights, bowling. Dad kept saying, just one more game, just one more.

Well, I’m gonna go take the dog for a brisk walk, and maybe take the girls swimming later on. They have a birthday party to go to tomorrow, so we have to go pick out a present too. And maybe I’ll start some tomatoes. My life, she ain’t all that exciting, but I like it.

Happy Saturday!

Call me Crazy…

I finally broke down and ordered some tomato seeds from BakerCreek. They were sold out of two types that I had my heart set on trying this year, so I’m still hunting around for a trade to obtain them. I was good, I restricted myself to eight (would have been ten obviously, if they’d had them all), and some new snow pea seed, and asparagus seed. The obvious questions came from my husband. If the ones I have are ‘heirloom’, and I saved a lot of seeds last year, then why on earth did I need to purchase more? And seeing as I have made some great trades with others, do I not have more than enough?? I obviously just like spending money, don’t I??? And, hey, I don’t even like tomatoes???? Well, he obviously just doesn’t get it!!

If you are a gardener, then you understand the desire to collect seeds and grow them. And if you are a tomato grower/enthusiast, then I’m sure I don’t have to explain it. Once you see the pictures in the seed catalogs, and you hear the debates between others over which tomato is superior, and not one person has a favorite’s list that matches anyone else, then you slowly start to realize that this is something you have to do yourself. You have to try as many different ones as possible, you have to encourage others to try them, and you will never be satisfied until you are swimming in tomatoes of every color, shape and size. Or at least have the seed collection to grow the tomatoes to do so (when you’ve actually gone crazy and swimming in tomatoes is part of your plan.)

And I do so like tomatoes. As long as there is some salt, or they are in a salad, or bruschetta, etc. I just don’t like them by themselves.

PS Did you notice I didn’t mention the weather once??

Happy Friday!

I won’t say another peep about the weather till it is spring. I promise!!!

Thank you Mr. Postman. He just delivered my Harrowsmith magazine. I decided to gift myself with a subscription this year, and this is my first issue. I haven’t read it in a while, but I have a pile of old Harrowsmiths, from the ’80’s, that have some great articles, and I really enjoyed reading it. Yes, I am a packrat, and, yes I keep lots of old stuff just in case cause you never know!! Lots of pretty pictures anyway. So I hope it’s still a good mag.

Galina

This is a pic of my little tomato plant. Finally has a few flowers, maybe I’ll get tomatoes in a month or so. I’m hoping. Next year, I’m going to start a few indoor plants sooner, and see what I can get production wise. I also need to give my brugs a bath, the aphids are munching and getting gross again. Doesn’t that sound fun? I battle them every year indoors, they just love brugs. Wish I could let a few ladybugs loose, they would have a feast! Someday I’ll get my greenhouse, and then the ladybugs will have fun. And if you’re wondering, yes, I literally bring the brugs into the tub, spray them with soapy alcohol water mix, let them stand for about 10 minutes, then shower them off. Quite a production.

Sasha and Cherry - canoodling

I love this picture of Sasha and Cherry. What a nice dog, eh? Sharing her bed with the cat!

One final note, don’t forget the time change this weekend. We lose an hour of sleep. Bah! And advice from the fire department: change the batteries in your smoke alarm at the same time. After seeing what happened to my neighbors’ house during Christmas, I tend to think smoke alarms are just a tad very important!!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Whine, whine, whine….

I feel like that is all I’ve been doing lately, to anyone who will listen. But we are in for another snowstorm tomorrow, possibly breaking all records for snowfall levels here. I’m sick, sick, sick of it!!! Enough already!!! I can’t take anymore shoveling, snow days, cold, white stuff!

And, yes, I’d like some good cheese with this whine, preferably a nice Danish blue. I love blue cheese. The kids and Todd call it it stinky blue. I call it delish. Especially with a pear, or a few grapes.

That is it for tonight, les amis. A demain!
